To make this balloon topper, I knew I wanted dissimilar sizes of balloons, but smaller than I'd ever seen commercially bachelor.  I could make the 5" balloons (the smallest I could find to order) work every bit the BIG balloons in this tutorial, but the smaller balloons had me stumped until I came upwards with the thought of using 260 balloons.  That'south a blazon of balloon 2" in diameter and 60" long.  Y'all might know them as twisting balloons, or balloon brute balloons.  They were PERFECT for these mini balloon garland block toppers!  I also experimented with h2o balloons, simply while the size of those was nice and small, those balloons are designed to be flimsy and break, and so they did not hold air nearly also as latex balloons.

This modern block topper really has wow factor, especially if you add together some fresh flowers and greenery to the balloon garland.

I'll become to the step past footstep instructions soon, I promise--there were merely and so many pretty pictures I took of these darling block toppers!  I held myself back in sharing, I swear.

How to Brand a Balloon Garland Cake Topper

Materials for making a Mini Balloon Garland Cake Topper.

Mini Airship Garland Cake Topper Materials

  • 5" balloons (2 or three)
  • Balloon twisting balloons (also called 260 balloons).  You'll demand virtually 6.
  • xviii" length of wire
  • balloon pump
  • ii nutrient-safe wooden skewers
  • Small flowers and greenery (or tiny bogus flowers and greenery), optional

Five mini balloons made from a single 260 twisting balloon.

I consistently got six mini balloons out of each twisting balloon, and I used nearly thirty miniature balloons for each airship garland cake topper.  So you only need five or half dozen of the long balloons to make this project.

I generally used regular Qualatex brand twisting balloons (an excellent, reliable make), but I also bought some metallic 260s and admittedly loved how those looked mixed in with the regular balloons.

Miniature Balloon Garland Instructions

cut 260 twisting balloon on the nozzle of a balloon pump to make miniature balloons.

Stretch the 260 balloon before inflating.  Use a balloon pump to inflate the balloon.  Once again, I go to the pros at Qualatex for airship pumps--they brand a high quality product.  It's so much nicer than using flimsy, super-cheap pumps.

Y'all need a balloon pump for two reasons:

  • First, 260s are Really REALLY hard to blow up with your mouth!
  • 2d, they're incommunicable to accident upwards with your mouth after you lot've cut off the rolled cease of the balloon.  But as y'all can run into in the photo above, you lot can insert the nozzle of the pump in the trimmed balloon and inflate it over again easily to create more mini balloons.

Inflate just a pocket-sized amount of the balloon.  Let out any backlog air until you lot take a chimera the size of the miniature airship you want.  Necktie off the open terminate, leaving yourself about an inch of excess balloon at the tied end.

Pull the two tails of the balloon together, and tie in a double knot.  Cutting off excess.  That's all there is to it!  Teeny tiny balloons!  Vary the balloon size, making some a little bit larger, some smaller, to create texture and interest in the finished balloon garland.  Just like you would making the big kind.

The largest balloons--the ones that mimic the look of those big, round 36" balloons in the regular balloon garlands--are just normal 5" balloons.  Merely inflate the 5" balloons about halfway, and squeeze all the air to the end of the balloon and so the color will look correct, and tie off.  Trim off virtually of the neck of the balloon.

If you want a more than pastel version of a 5" balloon, y'all can put colored balloons inside white balloons and blow them upward together.  A airship pump is essential if you're doing this.  And even with a balloon pump, this technique did not work with the narrow 260 balloons--I could not become the doubled upwardly ones to inflate at all.  But with 5" and larger balloons, information technology's a bang-up way to create actress visual interest and colour variation in a balloon garland.

Assembling the Miniature Airship Garland Cake Topper

Standard balloon garlands are typically made with either a airship strip ( also called balloon tape--a plastic strip with holes in it specifically made for making airship garlands) or line-fishing line.  But for this projection, wire was the perfect choice.

Y'all don't need a particularly thick gauged wire for this craft project; I used 24 approximate silvery colored craft wire.  I likewise experimented with floral wire, and it worked beautifully (and is less expensive than a lot of other craft wires).

To make the mini balloon garland, only slide the tiny balloons on the wire.  As yous can come across in the photo above and in the tutorial video, the mode I fabricated the smaller balloons makes information technology incredibly piece of cake to cord the balloons on the wire!  To attach the largest balloons (the ones made with the five" balloons), I merely poked the wire through the tail of the airship.  Y'all could also wrap the wire around the knot of the balloon a few times; that would help with the positioning of the balloons later.

Wrap the remaining wire around the ends of two wooden dowels.  I used a 12-inch skewer for this projection because I had them on hand already and I knew they were food safety.  You could also utilize pretty newspaper straws.

You can also attach the wooden skewer in the eye of the garland, similar I did with the pink and blue/green versions.  You can just wrap the wire around the stick a couple times, or attach it with a depression temperature glue gun.

Tin can I Make a Balloon Garland Cake Topper the Day Earlier?

Yep, absolutely!  In fact, in this photo, the pink balloon garland was four days old, the rainbow balloon garland was five days former, and the bluish/light-green mini balloon garland was brand new.  The balloons practice start to oxidize a flake (go more cloudy) and lose a chip of air, merely with these balloons and this technique, yous can definitely brand your cake topper a day or 2 in advance.  Obviously, if you're going to add fresh flowers and greenery, add those correct before the issue.

How to Add together Flowers to a Balloon Garland DIY Cake Topper

Accept your cake topper to the adjacent level past adding greenery!  I absolutely beloved the await of gorgeous big balloon garlands when they include flowers--it looks and then elegant!  And so I went in my backyard with a pair of clippers and picked whatsoever tiny flowers I found.  The "vine" is actually oregano from my herb garden!

You can but carefully place the flowers, nestling the stems between balloons, merely that's a little precarious.  A low temperature mucilage gun turned out to be the perfect solution to tack the flowers in place.  Yes, you tin hot glue things to balloons without popping them if you apply a low temperature mucilage gun!

You can also use artificial flowers.  Try looking for miniature silk flowers designed for card-making, scrapbooking, or doll houses to get the right scale.
